2023: 10 senators eyeing gov ship seats

Sat May 15 2021 Signs and expectations are that at least 10 out of the 109 members of the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly are likely to contest for governorship elections in their states, Daily Trust Saturday reports. Though the lawmakers are yet to formally declare their intentions to join the governorship race, scheming and caucusing around them revealed that it is just a matter of time before they will let out their ambitions. Since the country returned to democracy in 1999, it has become the tradition of lawmakers in both chambers of the National Assembly to cross over from the parliament to the executive arm as governors, while second term governors move to the parliament as senators.

Orji Kalu And 2023 Presidency

Sufuyan Ojeifo writes that Kalu is conversant with the dynamics of presidential power politics I watched and listened to the interview that a former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, granted on Sunday, April 25, 2021, on Channels Television’s “Politics Today”, anchored by Seun Okinbaloye. To be sure, Kalu is the Senate Chief Whip, and on both scores of political accomplishments, his qualification to speak on the number of issues that the interviewer attempted to interrogate through his perspectives cannot be faulted. Kalu answered questions on the festering insecurity in the country and the burgeoning controversy over 2023 presidency. He alluded to some between-and-betwixt issues during the engagement. I had many takeaways from the interview session. But the crux of the takeaways, which I consider the real McCoy, was Kalu’s response to the question that bordered on his purported interest in the 2023 presidency.

Senate Observes a Minute Silence for Olowoporoku

By Deji Elumoye and Udora Orizu The Senate Wednesday, observed a minute silence in honour of Senator Bode Olowoporoku who died recently after a brief illness at the age of 76. This followed a point of order raised on his demise by former Senate Minority Leader, Senate Biodun Olujimi (PDP, Ekiti South). Coming under Order 43 of the Senate Standing Rules, Olujimi noted that Senator Olowoporoku, who was born in llawe-Ekiti, Ekiti State in 1945, was at the forefront in the agitation for the creation of Ekiti State. She said he provided extensive funding, and also played a prominent role working with the Council of Ekiti Obas and the committee for the creation of Ekiti State, adding that he utilized his robust network through his close friends Olusola Saraki and Adamu Ciroma to meet the late Head of State, Sani Abacha, for the creation of Ekiti State.
