lreuter@adirondackdailyenterprise.com LAKE PLACID It’s transition time in the Adirondacks, and skiing at Whiteface Mountain and Mount Van Hoevenberg is winding down. It could be the final week of Alpine and Nordic skiing at these two venues operated by the state Olympic Regional Development Authority. Whiteface is tentatively slated to close with its final day of skiing on Sunday, April 11, but warm temperatures predicted for the late part of this week could hasten that. On April 7, the mountain had 34 of 90 trails open, with four of its 12 lifts operating, and 8 to 18 inches of base depth. If the Alpine center makes it to Sunday, there will have been 128 days of skiing at the mountain. Opening day this winter was Dec. 5, which was later than recent years. Last winter, skiing started at Whiteface on Nov. 15, 2019, which was the earliest opening date in recent seasons. It closed early, however, due to the coronavirus pandemic, with operations shutting down on March 15.
