The remains of Lateef Jakande, the first elected governor of Lagos State and a former minister of works, were interred at the Vaults and Gardens Cemetery, Ikoyi on Friday.
The event marked the exit of the last of the five governors elected on the platform of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) at the beginning of the short-lived Nigerian Second Republic in 1979.
He died on Thursday at the age of 91.
In his days as governor of the Lagos, which was also the federal capital at the time, Mr Jakande was called ‘Baba Kekere.’

ABEOKUTA – Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday, disclosed that the late former governor of Lagos State, Alh. Lateef Jakande served the country principally through journalism and through newspaper management before becoming an active politician.
In his condolence letter to the wife of the late first civilian governor, Alhaja Sikirat Abimbola, copy which was made to newsmen through his Media Assistant, Kehinde Akinyemi, in Abeokuta, Obasanjo said Jakande deserved all accolades poured on him over his death.
Obasanjo who went down memory lane on the pen profession of the late governor, stated that his success catapulted him to the height he got to in public office.

Former Governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, reportedly died on Thursday, 11 February, 2021 at the age of 91.
Jakande, aka Baba Kekere, brought a lot of development to Lagos as governor between October 1, 1979 and December 31, 1983, in line with the five cardinal programmes of the Unity Party of Nigeria founded by a former Premier of the Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
Incumbent Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, confirmed the passage of the elder statesman in a statement.
