The end is in sight for direct provision centres with the publication of a plan to cease the practice of paying firms to house asylum seekers in former hotels and other communal buildings on a long term basis.
Instead, new arrival centres are planned during what is termed a four-month orientation phase. At the end of this period applicants, people whose protection claims are still being processed will get their own room or own door accommodation in the community which they will have to rent.

PETALING JAYA: The Transport Ministry will set up consolidation hubs along the Pan Borneo Highway to develop the network to transport and distribute goods between Sabah s ports and airports, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
The Transport Minister said the plan was part of the Federal Government s implementation of the Logistics and Trade Facilitation Masterplan.
“The consolidation hubs, among which, are located in Sandakan, Lahad Datu and Tawau.
“We will continue to engage industry players to identify locations that will give optimum impact to Sabah s logistics ecosystem,” he said in a Facebook post on Thursday (Feb 18).
Dr Wee had a virtual meeting earlier with Sabah logistic industrial players that was initiated by Sabah Logistics Forum (SLF) chairman Datuk Ng Kiat Min, who is also the managing director of Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd.
