US Army is developing a the most powerful laser in history which will vaporize targets

The US Army is developing its most powerful laser yet that is a million times more powerful than current systems.  Most laser weapons fire a continuous beam until a target melts or catches fire, but the Tactical Ultrashort Pulsed Laser (UPSL) for Army Platforms will emit short, pulse-like bursts. It s being designed to reach a terawatt for a brief 200 femtoseconds, which is one quadrillionth of a second, compared to the 150-kilowatt maximum of current systems. Even for that infinitesimal amount of time, the UPSL could vaporize the surface of a drone. It s also thought such a burst would disrupt nearby electronics systems, making it a functional electromagnetic pulse (EMP).

Lockheed Delivers Laser Weapon to Navy for Testing

Lockheed Delivers Laser Weapon to Navy for Testing The company is advancing and demonstrating a range of technologies to position laser weapon systems for success on the battlefield and at sea. Jan 15th, 2021 Lockheed Martin This year, the U.S. Navy will field the first acquisition program to deploy the High Energy Laser with Integrated Optical-dazzler and Surveillance, or HELIOS, a laser weapon system with high-energy fiber lasers for permanent fielding by the U.S. Department of Defense. This will be the only deployed laser system integrated into an operational Flight IIA DDG, and follows the recent demonstration of full laser power in excess of the 60 kW requirement. The scalable laser design architecture spectrally combines multiple kilowatt fiber lasers to attain high beam quality at various power levels.
