That Telemiracle in 2001 marked the first time the 20-hour fundraiser had cleared the $3 million mark. Within a few years, it would eclipse $5 million for the first time. In 2018, the year that Estevan’s Susan Colbow was the Telemiracle committee chair, it surpassed $7 million. How impressive was that? The fundraiser has not made more than $6 million in any other year. The money raised through Telemiracle goes to meet the medical needs of Saskatchewan people. If someone needs to purchase a medical scooter, Telemiracle is there. If someone requires financial assistance for travel for a medical issue, Telemiracle helps. There are a lot of people who have benefitted from the money that we have donated to Telemiracle. And the Telemiracle Foundation assisted such projects as the dialysis unit at St. Joseph’s Hospital and the inclusive playground at Westview School.
The board of directors also thanked Jackie Wall, Travis Frank and Dwight (Fitz) Bramble for their assistance as members of the organizing committee. The group will continue to work towards launching a vibrant centre with a diverse range of programs for youths in Estevan. We ve been meeting officially and unofficially since the end of 2019. This is over a year of planning, conversations and discussions, said Fisher. The efforts of the people involved are now coming to fruition. We are definitely at the point where we have a vision for what we want and we know what it looks like, Fisher added.
A non-profit organization has been created to move forward with this plan, creating the Estevan Public Youth Centre Inc. The board of directors are chairperson Cathy Welta, vice-chair Jordan Culham, secretary Patrick Fisher, treasurer Sheila Guenther, and directors Susan Colbow, Shelly Veroba and Brittany Zahn. The Board of Directors would also like to thank Jackie Wall, Travis Frank and Dwight (Fitz) Bramble for their assistance as members of the organizing committee. Plans are underway to have EPYC programming available as early as July. Phase 1 involves hiring a youth program director and using existing facilities on a rotating/as available basis. Phase 2 moves to a temporary facility and additional programs.
We had some financial difficulties a few years ago, and Saskatchewan command installed an advisory committee to watch over us. We ve been under the advisory committee for four years. And as of (Dec. 15) we ve been released from the advisory committee, said Royal Canadian Legion Estevan branch president Jim (Frosty) Forrest. It s good work that the branch has done and the support of the community as well. The legion also held the election of officers the same night. Forrest was re-elected as the branch president for the next two years. Tyson Wilhelm was elected the first vice-president. Willie Forrest is now the second vice-president. Leonard Grube was elected the legion’s treasurer, and Willie Forrest is also sergeant at arms. Other executive officers were also elected.
