Render Meat & Potatoes to donate food for frontline workers at vaccination site

SOUTH BEND — Render Meat & Potatoes has partnered with United Beverage and Stanz Foodservice in an effort to feed frontline workers. Render co-owner Hilary Maich said the idea came when she noticed her business received helped from government loans, loyal customers and family during the pandemic and she wanted to do her part. “(The business is) going in the right direction, so why not do something positive for others?” Maich said. “A lot of people have looked out for me at this time and I feel bad because we haven’t been helping anyone, and we can.” Beginning next week, Render employees will cook and donate 50 homemade meals every Tuesday and Wednesday to frontline workers and volunteers assisting at the vaccination site at Hedwig Memorial Center, 331 S. Scott St. in South Bend. Maich anticipates she will continue the donation for four weeks, but there is a chance it could be extended depending on logistics and donations.

Vanilla Bean Creamery to open Granger location this Saturday

When preparing to open a second location, Clara Miller was surprised at just how much ice cream she needed to make. “I’ve made ice cream almost every day last week,” Miller said. “On Saturday, I made ice cream for 12 hours and it’s like it didn’t even put a dent in it. … There’s no end to it.” As daunting as it may sound, Miller said, it’s a good thing and necessary in being ready for what’s to come. She, along with daughter and co-owner Krista Berkey, will open Vanilla Bean Creamery in its Granger location this Saturday.
