Israeli ‘Enemy Ship’ Responsible for Ecological Disaster in Mediterranean Feb 23, 2021 Lebanon has blamed “a ship of the Israeli enemy” for the country’s worst marine ecological disaster since 2006, following an oil leak in the Mediterranean. Al Arabiya reports that Lebanon’s Prime Minister, Hassan Diab, has deputed the Ministers of Defence and Environment, as well as the National Council for Scientific Research, to investigate the oil leak, and to keep the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon Informed, regarding the incident. The Director of Programs at Greenpeace Middle East and North Africa, Julian Jreissati, said that Lebanon’s Ministry of Environment should immediately assess the magnitude of the risk of the spill. Heartbreak at sudden passing of Mark (26)

Tributes have been paid to Private Mark Mahon, who was laid to rest in Rathvilly on Monday after his sudden death last week at the age of 26. A serving member of the Irish Defence Forces, Pte Mahon was working at Stephens Barracks in Kilkenny on Thursday (11th) when he became unwell. A doctor and nurse were called to perform CPR and Mark was transferred to St Luke s Hospital where he passed away a short time later. Mark served with distinction as a peacekeeper with the 115th Infantry Battalion to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). He had returned from overseas duty before Christmas.

Increased Security Crucial to Protect Peacekeepers Risking ‘Ultimate Sacrifice’, United Nations Staff Union Says, Citing 15 Killed by Deliberate Attacks in 2020 Format ORG/1714 At least 15 United Nations and associated personnel 12 peacekeepers and three civilians were killed in malicious attacks in the line of duty in 2020, according to the Standing Committee for the Security and Independence of the International Civil Service of the United Nations Staff Union. Deliberate killings in 2020 bring the total death toll in the past 11 years to at least 440 United Nations and associated personnel killed from a diversity of attacks, including from improvised explosive devices, rocket and artillery fire, mortar rounds, indirect fire, landmines, grenades, suicide attacks, targeted assassinations and armed ambushes.
