Libya: A peaceful transfer of power heralds a precarious new phase

Libya: A peaceful transfer of power heralds a precarious new phase Borzou Daragahi © Provided by The Independent A new Libyan government overseeing the entirety of the north African nation took power in the capital on Tuesday, formally ending a messy seven-year period during which rival administrations in the east and west claimed authority over the country. Prime minister Fayez Serraj, head of the former United Nations-recognised Government of National Accord, handed power to interim prime minister Abdul-Hamid Dbeibah in the capital, Tripoli, where the government will oversee the troubled and war-ravaged oil-rich nation until elections scheduled for 24 December. Mr Serraj, arriving in Tripoli on Monday night from Turkey, met with Mr Dbeibah and Mohamed al-Manfi, the head of a three-person presidency council, for the handover, which came after the new ministers and officials were sworn into office on Monday during a ceremony in the eastern Libyan city of Tobru

Libya's interim government takes power after handover in Tripoli | Middle East News

A transitional government in Libya has taken power in the capital, Tripoli, officially beginning a process designed to end 10 years of chaos and lead elections late this year. Fayez al-Sarraj, head of the outgoing United Nations-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA), transferred power on Tuesday to Prime Minister Abdelhamid Dbeibah, and Mohammad Younes Menfi, who chairs a three-member presidential council. The ceremony in Tripoli came a day after Dbeibah and his cabinet were sworn in before legislators and Libya’s top judges in the eastern town of Tobruk. legislators had already endorsed the interim government last week amid international pressure to implement a UN-brokered political road map.
