Professor Paul de Leeuw, Director of the Energy Transition Institute at Robert Gordon University
A new UK Offshore Energy Workforce Transferability Review by Robert Gordon University (RGU) highlights that the offshore energy workforce mix will change significantly in the next 10 years, with roles in decarbonised energies projected to increase from 20% to 65% of all jobs in the offshore energy sector (oil & gas, offshore wind, carbon capture utilisation and storage and hydrogen).
The Review also indicates that over 90% of the UK’s oil and gas workforce have medium to high skills transferability and are well positioned to work in adjacent energy sectors.
Scots university to lead UK decarbonisation efforts with £20m cash boost The UK Government has announced a £166.5 million investment to help the transition to a green economy, including a new major project based in Edinburgh. The package will contribute to the development of new technologies to fight climate change and meet the UK’s climate targets, while creating more than 60,000 “well-paid” green jobs across the UK. Edinburgh’s Heriot Watt University will receive £20m to establish a world-leading Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre (IDRIC) that will accelerate the decarbonisation of industries which significantly contribute to UK emissions. The Centre will bring together new technologies and address the challenges faced by industrial areas, helping to provide solutions that reduce costs, risks and emissions.

The Nuclear Industry Association (NIA), RenewableUK and Solar Energy UK - representing Britain’s three leading zero-carbon power generators - today called for urgent action to build new wind, nuclear and solar capacity and for a binding target of 100% grid decarbonisation by 2035. In a joint statement, they wrote that, with just six months to go until the UK co-hosts the COP26 summit, Britain’s grid is dirtier now than it was a year ago , with heavy reliance on fossil fuels.

Citing data from the National Grid ESO, the carbon intensity of electricity - the measure of CO2 emissions per unit of electricity consumed - was about 5% higher year-on-year in the first four months of 2021. Gas-fired generation was 22% higher, driven by the need to meet demand. This was despite the UK spending more weeks under COVID-19 restrictions from January-April 2021 than in the same period in 2020.
