Safe consumption site in Regina gets preliminary approval

New, temporary safe consumption site to open in Regina

(Dominick Lucyk/980 CJME) The second safe drug consumption site in Saskatchewan will soon open its doors. The Nēwo-Yôtina Friendship Centre in Regina has been given preliminary approval to provide a space for people to use drugs under supervision. Saskatchewan’s first facility to do that, Prairie Harm Reduction, opened in Saskatoon in October. Michael Parker, the Regina facility’s executive director, said there is some final vetting to go through. After that, operators of the site aim to be open in two weeks.

Chief Bray looks ahead to opportunities and challenges in the new year

With a COVID-19 vaccine program gearing up and the possible end of the pandemic in sight, Regina’s police chief, Evan Bray, said it’s hard to completely understand what the new normal is going to look like. “There is going to be a day, hopefully in the not too distant future, where we can gather without masks and we can kind of go back to some form of normalcy,” said Bray. “But I think we’re all affected. The generation that is living right now will look and live differently going forward even if it’s just the use of hand sanitizer and washing your hands.”
