Arizona Recognizes Brain Tumor Awareness Month

News Release May 6, 2021 PHOENIX   Governor Doug Ducey declared May to be Brain Tumor Awareness Month to promote education of the condition, recognize the medical professionals who combat the issue, highlight the significant progress in research, and honor the families who have been impacted. “Brain tumors affect countless people each year, and impact the lives of not only the individual, but their loved ones as well,” said Governor Ducey. “Nearly three years ago, we lost an Arizona giant, statesman and war hero to Glioblastoma Senator John McCain. His is just one of the many precious lives lost. It’s important to spread awareness of the impact brain tumors have on patients and their families, and to honor those who have fought hard and are continuing to fight every day.”

Persian New Year fest a bit different this year

For the past couple years, more than 5,000 people have swarmed the Scottsdale Waterfront over the course of seven hours in early March for one purpose: to celebrate the Persian New Year, or Nowruz. But this year, the founders of the Persian New Year Festival nonprofit made the difficult decision to replace the multifaceted festival with an interactive art exhibition that allows for social distancing and prevents crowding amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. “We are thrilled to be able to still celebrate the Persian New Year in a way that allows the public to remain safe and socially distanced during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Persian New Year Festival Co-Founder Lawdan Shojaee.

Promising treatment for deadly Glioblastoma being tested on humans at Ivy Brain Tumor Center A promising non-invasive treatment to effectively and safely destroy deadly brain tumors is being tested on human patients for the first time ever at the Ivy Brain Tumor Center at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. This new treatment has shown to be incredibly effective in treating aggressive brain tumors in animals, said Dr. Shwetal Mehta, a molecular neuro-oncologist and the chief operating officer and deputy director of the center.  Dr. Shwetal Mehta Now, medical researchers are testing it on 30 human patients who have recurrent glioblastoma, the brain cancer that took the life of Arizona Senator John McCain in 2018.
