N.J. district reverses course, postpones return to classrooms as COVID cases rise Updated Apr 01, 2021; Posted Mar 31, 2021 The John F. Kennedy Educational Complex in Paterson, N.J., Jan. 21, 2020Rob Jennings / NJ Advance Media for NJ.com Facebook Share School district officials in Paterson reversed course Wednesday night and announced that all-remote learning will continue “until further notice.” The school board immediately accepted her recommendation. “We want to make sure that, when we return, we do so as safely as possible,” said school board president Kenneth L. Simmons. Approximately 28,000 students in Paterson, the state’s third-largest city, have been relying on virtual instruction from home since schools across the state first closed in mid-March 2020 at the onset of the pandemic.

Paterson NJ schools delay reopening plan for in-person classes

“At present, the conditions are simply not favorable enough to reopen. The safety of our students and staff must come first,” Shafer said during Wednesday night’s special Paterson Board of Education meeting. Shafer said the number of COVID cases in Paterson and Passaic County had increased by about 50% during the past month. The superintendent also said the number of school-linked outbreaks in the state has risen by 61% during that time. “This uptick marks a localized peak in community transmission, similar in magnitude to what happened in April 2020 and again in November 2020, she said. “Unfortunately, new cases seem to on the rise even though nearly one in five adults in the state have now been fully vaccinated.”

Schools may pause reopening as COVID surges

School reopening plans may be put on hold due to a rise in COVID mutations. Everyone agrees the best place for a child to learn is in a classroom, but just as more schools were planning at least some in-person learning, there are signals the current spike in COVID cases could put that on hold. The number of schools offering all remote instruction has been steadily dropping and, as of this week, fewer than 100 districts were all virtual. Slowest to come back were schools mostly in populous urban areas where infection rates were highest and aging school buildings lacked the spaced for proper social distancing.
