To the Editor:
During National Nurses Week (May 6-12), nurses deserve our support, recognition and appreciation more than ever. I m writing to recognize a particular group of nurses who are Ridgefield’s unsung heroes, a special team that works continuously behind the scenes to keep our community safe and healthy: the school nurses of Ridgefield Public Schools, St. Mary School and Ridgefield Academy.
From day one of the pandemic, our school nurses have gone above and beyond for the teachers, staff, families and children of our community. They eagerly and bravely returned to school during the pandemic and adopt new protocols to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 in our school buildings. The Department of Human Services is partnering with partnering with northeastern Pennsylvania county officials to promote that can help residents facing eviction or loss of utilities.
On Thursday, DHS Secretary Teresa Miller was joined by a panel representing organizations and government offices across Lackawanna, Pike, Luzerne, Wyoming and Susquehanna counties to discuss the Emergency Rental Assistance Program, which launched in March with a mission to combat severe financial setbacks and housing crises due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Miller noted that while the pandemic has adversely affected just about everyone, those that fall at or near the poverty line in Pennsylvania have been adversely impacted. Of particular interest are communities of color, which have seen higher rates of infection, serious illness, death, and economic impacts that include difficulty paying rent and keeping up to date on utilities.
Programs to assist tenants who owe back rent and utilities because of a financial hardship caused by the coronavirus pandemic are off to a slow start, with several counties reporting theyâve distributed only a fraction of the money allotted.
Lackawanna County began accepting applications for $6.2 million in federal funding it received to aid renters on March 4. As of Thursday, it had received about 300 applications and distributed $600,000, according to Eileen Wilson, housing resources coordinator for the countyâs Department of Human Services.
Luzerne County received 783 applications and paid out $1.4 million of the $9.4 million it was allocated, said Dave Ritter, director of housing for the Commission on Economic Opportunity, which is administering the program for Luzerne and Wyoming counties. Wyoming County received 24 applications and paid out about $24,000.
