WHO Director-General s Award for Global Health - Dr Catalin Denciu
The Seventy-fourth World Health Assembly, held on 24–31 May 2021, was once again dominated by discussions on responding to the short- and longer-term consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, and on ensuring that countries, health systems, organizations and societies are better prepared to meet the challenges of future health threats.
Better prepared, better protected
Central in this Assembly were the questions of how to get out of this health crisis and what lessons to draw from this pandemic. Many expressed the need to ensure equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines.
Responding to the WHO Director-General’s plea to support the “drive to December” to achieve the goal of getting 30% vaccinated in every country around the globe by the end of this year, many Member States from the WHO European Region actively committed to step up their engagement in international cooperation and solidarity. The Chernobyl nuclear disaster of April 1986 resulted in an unprecedented release of radioactive material. Making headlines around the world, this tragically cost the lives of many of those who responded to the incident and lived in the surrounding area. In the decades since, there has been a rapid increase in the number of people who have had diseases and disabilities linked to the accident, with health impact reverberating years on.

“The how of WHO” (“ВОЗ рекомендует” in Russian) is a new podcast from WHO/Europe. It is tailored specifically to the interests of Russian speakers across the broad and diverse WHO European Region. The aim of the podcast is to explain in simple terms where public health recommendations come from and what an individual can do to stay healthy.
The first episode of the podcast, available on multiple podcast platforms, focuses on the importance of creating smoke-free environments. It includes a discussion with technical experts from WHO/Europe as well as success stories from different countries in the Region.
