EUROPEAN UNION – CHINA EU leader backs sanctions against CCP boss in Xinjiang

by Emanuele Scimia Reinhard Bütikofer wants Chen Quanguo, architect of the internment camps for Uyghurs, punished under the new EU mechanism for the protection of human rights. Discussions will start shortly on a list of offenders. For several observers, the European bloc must move from words to deeds. Brussels (AsiaNews) – I consider Chen Quanguo, the Chinese Communist Party Secretary in Xinjiang, the most outstanding candidate for application of the new EU mechanism for the protection of human rights” said Reinhard Bütikofer, head of the European Parliament Delegation for Relations with China, speaking to AsiaNews. The EU legislative branch adopted the Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime on Monday.

Trump s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara null and void

The Left in the European Parliament firmly rejects the Trump administration’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over occupied Western Sahara as a bargaining chip for the normalization of ties with Israel.  This provocative act that violates international law follows other similarly grotesque US unilateral moves such as the recognition of Israel’s illegal annexation of the occupied Syrian Golan Heights and of West Bank settlements. The incoming Biden administration must reverse these lawless moves and return the US to multilateralism and a rules-based order.  Western Sahara, as recognised by the UN, is a Non-Self-Governing Territory that awaits de-colonisation, and therefore it cannot be considered as part of Morocco. The European Court of Justice has reaffirmed in its rulings that Morocco and Western Sahara are two distinct territories.
