EC gives ‘much-awaited signal to re-ignite’ European solar manufacturing

Europe’s solar industry has lauded the inclusion of a commitment to “re-ignite” Europe’s solar manufacturing sector within the European Commission’s refreshed industrial strategy.
Earlier today the European Commission published a revised industrial strategy, revealing a host of measures, aims and commitments designed to help guide its member states’ recovery from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
It builds on an initial industrial strategy that was originally published in March 2020, just as the impacts of the pandemic were beginning to be felt on the continent. Throughout the pandemic, the European Commission writes that European industry was “exposed to new vulnerabilities and older dependencies”, the strategy states.

Switzerland-headquartered PV module manufacturer Meyer Burger has formally unveiled its range of heterojunction (HJ) solar modules for mass production.
Meyer Burger, which had previously produced heterojunction manufacturing equipment for other solar module brands, unveiled its new product line through a presentation on its website, Youtube and Facebook today (27 April), with three variants in the range.
In addition, new production facilities will be opened in Bitterfeld-Wolfen and Freiberg, Germany, in late May to begin mass production. The equipment provider-turned-module manufacturer said in January that it wants to scale up its production capacity to 1.4GW by 2023, having been awarded €22.5 million in regional German government grants to support the establishment of a heterojunction (HJ) PV cell production plant in the country. Having jostled for the title for some time, the International Energy Agency made headlines late last year when it crowned solar PV as the new “king of electricity markets” worldwide, ahead of wind, hydropower and all other generation technologies. Citing drastic reductions in price over the last decade in particular, the IEA – which is reasonably famed for having underestimated solar PV’s potential in the past – projected that solar would smash deployment records in each year from 2022 onwards, becoming the preeminent source of power in Europe by 2025.

According to SolarPower Europe, the ESI will accelerate Europe’s climate agenda and economic recovery, contributing to the delivery of the European Green Deal objectives. The ESI aims to scale up a strong PV manufacturing industry in Europe across the entire value chain from raw materials to recycling, which will capture the additional 20 GW of annual solar demand forecasted in Europe for the next decade.
