Share Add to Bookmarks Including energy-from-waste (EfW) plants in the EU’s revised emissions trading system (ETS) would increase its costs and so run counter to its goal of reducing emissions and trigger more landfilling of residual waste. That warning has come from sector trade body European Suppliers of Waste-to-Energy Technology (ESWET), which said that bringing incineration into the system would have a negative impact on member states’ objectives of 65% recycling and 10% landfilling rates by 2035.  The EU is in the process of revising the system so that it better helps to achieve a climate-neutral EU by 2050. It works on a cap and trade principle, under which a total amount is set for certain greenhouse gases that can be emitted by installations covered by the system. Within that, companies receive or buy emission allowances, which they can trade as needed.
