Salernitana s last season in Serie A brought trouble for Fiorentina, but tragedy for their own fans

Salernitana’s last season in Serie A brought trouble for Fiorentina, but tragedy for their own fans Share this story Photo by Ivan Romano/Getty Images The final day of the Serie B season has just seen Salernitana win promotion to Serie A, for only the third time in their history. Since their last appearance in the top-flight, the club has twice gone bust. The first time, the new club restarted in Serie C1, but the last time, in 2011, the club found themselves in Serie D for the first time ever. This is where Claudio Lotito comes into the picture, taking over the club along with his brother-in law, Marco Mezzaroma. While the club celebrates their success, the rules which state that two clubs in the same division cannot be owned by the same person, means that Lotito, also the man in charge at Lazio, will now have to make a decision on which club to keep.

Alex Ferguson excelled at Manchester United, but his true greatness shone in Aberdeen © Supplied Sir Alex Ferguson achieved the impossible with Aberdeen and Manchester United during a glittering career. Sir Alex Ferguson and sentimentality tend to go together like Boris Johnson and a comb, but there was something heart-rending about the trailer for the former manager’s new film Never Give In. The documentary, which chronicles the Scot’s myriad triumphs in football, and also illustrates how close he came to death after suffering a brain haemmorhage two years ago, will hit cinemas at the end of May and, as you might expect, most of the focus will be on his achievements at Manchester United, whom he transformed from a club living on past glories to the powerhouses of the English Premiership, during his 26 years as manager.

The Manoel Island campaign in season 1965-66

A dispute between the clubs and the owners of the Empire Stadium in September 1965 resulted in the game being transferred to the old naval ground of Manoel Island. Wednesday September 29 1965, was a historic day in the history of local football.  For the first time in 75 years, a Maltese club played on a ground owned by the clubs themselves. The occasion was Floriana’s home match against Borussia Dortmund, of Germany, in the first round of the European Cup Winners Cup.  Unfortunately, however, the ground was not up to standard. It sloped a little to one side, bringing to mind the old National Ground at Pietà.
