The nine-year old macaque, named Shaw, was one of 30 monkeys shipped from the Rock to Blair Drummond Safari Park, near Stirling, in 2014 as part of a plan to control the monkeys that were causing havoc in town at the time. Shaw was one of two macaques that escaped through the gates of their enclosure into a nearby compound where the lions were housed.

Horrified children watch as lions kill monkey at Blair Drummond safari park

SCOTTISH safari park bosses have had to apologise after children were left pretty traumatised after witnessing an escaped monkey being torn apart by a pride of lions. Children were said to have watched in horror as a barbary macaque broke out of its enclosure at Blair Drummond safari park, near Stirling, into the lion enclosure. One witness told The Mail on Sunday: “We could not believe what we were seeing it’s not what you expect at a safari park. We left pretty traumatised. “Surely it’s the park’s responsibility to keep endangered animals safe and not allow them to jump straight in the lion’s den? The awful sound of the monkey screaming for its life will stay with us.

This is the horrifying moment families watch lions maul a monkey

Families watched in horror as an endangered monkey was mauled to death by a pride of lions at one of the UK’s leading safari parks. An investigation has been launched after the Barbary macaque escaped from its own reserve and climbed into the lions’ den. Its screams could be heard across the Blair Drummond Safari Park as the big cats tore at its neck and limbs in full view of paying customers. One of the park’s keepers tried to shield the gravely injured monkey by parking his pick-up truck over its stricken body, but a lion snatched it from under the vehicle and ran off with it in its jaws.
