Remembering 1981: Four men dead as crisis escalates
• Raymond McCreesh and Patsy O Hara
Thursday, 21 May 1981, witnessed the deaths of two more Hunger Strikers. Raymond McCreesh passed away at 2.30am. Later that evening Patsy O’Hara died.
A Mass had been celebrated at Raymond McCreesh’s bedside on Wednesday evening by his brother Fr Brian McCreesh. He was semi-conscious and appeared to show some sign of recognition but died just a few hours later. His remains were returned to his beloved Camlough in South Armagh for the funeral the following Saturday.
Leaving the family home in St Malachy’s Terrace, the cortege stopped briefly at the lane outside the house where it was joined by a honour guard of IRA Volunteers, Cumann na mBan and Na Fianna Éireann. Led by a lone piper, the cortege paused to allow Raymond McCreesh’s comrades fire a final salute over the Tricolour-draped coffin.
April 17, 1969
On this day in 1968, Bernadette Devlin was elected to Britain’s Parliament on the “Unity” ticket, as MP for the Mid-Ulster constituency. The election followed the death of Ulster Unionist Party Member of Parliament for Mid Ulster, George Forrest, and Devlin found she was running against Forrest’s widow on the Unionist ticket. At 21, Devlin was the youngest woman ever to be elected to Parliament. Raised Roman Catholic in Cookstown, County Tyrone, Devlin became passionately involved in politics while a student at Queen’s University Belfast. She helped to form the Irish Republican Socialist Party along with Seamus Costello in 1974.
Brexit disrupts supply chains
The Good Friday Agreement of 1998 is largely credited with ending what had become a low-level civil war. One of its key stipulations was keeping the land border open between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland a development made possible in no small part because of the UK and the Republic of Ireland both being EU members in the single market and the customs union at the time.
Brexit negotiators aimed to protect the Good Friday Agreement. They drafted the Northern Ireland Protocol, which kept it in the EU s customs union and enabled the border to remain open.
