Ministers are set to reveal the biggest overhaul of the UK’s rail system in three decades, with reforms including the introduction of flexible season tickets and pay-as-you-go travel across the network. The coming week will see the publication of a long-awaited white paper on the future of the country’s rail network, the Times reported. Chief among the reforms, the day-to-day running of the rail system will be brought under the control of a new body, independent of the Department for Transport (DfT).

Council in unified call for critical investment

POWYS County Council have joined up with fellow authorities and businesses in calling for a unified plan for cross-border road and rail investment which is deemed “critical”. The group has urged the Union Connectivity Review panel to look at the issues that have led to a delay in multiple projects moving ahead in Mid Wales and the Borders. Projects affecting Mid Wales include: • The A5, A458 and the A483 corridor (which includes the recently announced Pant Llanymynech bypass) providing a key economic corridor across the border, essential to Oswestry, Shrewsbury and neighbouring towns in Wales such as Welshpool and Newtown

Boris Johnson will spend billions of pounds to save the Union

Billions of pounds will be spent on improving road and rail links to Scotland under plans being put forward by Boris Johnson to strengthen the Union, it was claimed today.  The Prime Minister is said to be preparing to splash the cash on better infrastructure in a desperate bid to see off the threat of Scottish independence.  The Government is also looking at treating Scottish NHS patients on beds in England to deal with an operations backlog while UK diplomats in foreign capitals will be told to stress the case against independence.  The plans could also see a student exchange programme set up between the UK nations.
