It s St George s Day tomorrow, but how much do we know about the patron saint of England? Tomorrow, April 23, is St George s Day. While traditional celebrations, such as street parties or organised events, may be cancelled this year due to restrictions around Covid, it doesn t mean we can t celebrate the patron saint of England at home. But who was St George, and how did he become patron saint of England?
Who was St George? Very little is actually known about the life of St George.
(Photo: PlanBee) IT’S St George’s Day tomorrow (23 April)- but this year’s celebrations are set to be a much quieter affair. In previous years, parties have been held and schools have hosted events to commemorate the patron saint of England. In 2019, Morris dancers descended on Horwich for a traditional celebration and in 2018 Bishop Bridgeman CE Primary School celebrated St George’s Day in style with an outdoor celebration. Lockdown restrictions mean that this type of celebration isn’t possible this year. However, we can still learn more about the saint and exactly how he became England’s patron saint.

QUIETLY conscientious, unsensational composers arenât the ones who generate attention, but they sometimes get their due acknowledgement. And an example is Brian Elias who, this Saturday, gets his own day at Wigmore Hall â with concerts livestreamed at 11.30am and 3pm (thereâll be no audience present) and access to an evocative documentary made about his life by the celebrated film-maker Barrie Gavin.
Born in India to Iraqi-Jewish parents but discreetly resident for many years just off the Finchley Road, Elias flourished through the 1980s/90s with high-profile scores like his Royal Ballet commission The Judas Tree and pieces at the Proms. But his output is painstakingly careful, which makes new works few and far between.
