Description
This is an 1875 Herbert William Wood map of the Khanate of Khiva in modern-day Uzbekistan - issued shortly after the 1873 Russian conquest of Khiva, a defining moment in the Great Game. Coverage extends from the southern coast of the Aral Sea (Lake Aral) south to the Kharesmian Desert. Great attention is paid to the all-important regional river network, particularly the Amu Darya (Oxus). Cities, towns, and villages are labeled, along with hills, lakes, and deserts.
The Khanate of KhivaThe Khanate of Khiva was an independent polity in the Amu Darya delta just south of the Aral Sea, active from roughly 1511 to 1920. The Khanate became a Russian protectorate in 1873, when the Tzar launched a massive invasion of Khiva. Bellosa looked a filly with a real future as she proved the market right in the Rossdales Maiden Filliesâ Stakes at Newmarket.
Champion jockey Oisin Murphy was booked by Jane Chapple-Hyam and from an opening price of 25-1 the daughter of Awtaad went off the 7-2 joint-favourite.
Bounced out on the rail, she never saw another rival and made every yard for a seven-length win from the 40-1 shot Verreaux Eagle.
Chapple-Hyam was did stress, however, that rumours the three-year-old had been working with her Classic hopeful Saffron Beach, who was second in Wednesdayâs Nell Gwyn, were wide of the mark.

do the protests against the siting of an Erebus memorial (to
the 257 New Zealanders who died in that tragedy) in a
secluded corner of a Parnell park happen to belong? IMO, it
is clearly the latter, and the reasons for thinking so are
explained below.
