As far as the first three movies with actual people being filmed, the special effects for all three really stand out and stand up with the passage of time.
The Patrick Stewart version has Joel Grey as The Ghost of Christmas Past and it is the only one that I can recall sticking to the original theme that his character was a candle shining the light on the images that once were. Scrooge angrily snuffs him out at the end of his scene and it still looks authentic over twenty years later.

In the mid-1970s, while travelling on the slowest train in the world from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi, I recall reading a substantial chunk of John Le Carre s espionage novel, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Though not a fast-paced book, it still had more momentum than the wretched train.
The sad news of Le Carre s death last weekend at the age of 89, had me thinking a bit more about that particular book. I have to admit I did not fully understand all of the complexities of the intricate plot and sometimes had to reread bits to work out who was who.

On December 12, one of the world’s greatest spy masters slipped from this world. Not from an assassin’s bullet in a darkened alley, poisoning from a nerve agent, or a wretched betrayal by someone wrongly trusted; but pneumonia. After a lifetime entwined with spycraft, David John Moore Cornwell, formerly of MI5 and MI6, passed away in his hospital bed, aged 89.
As the news broke the following day, the cover name Cornwell had created 60 years ago – not for a secret assignment, but for an espionage novel he was writing while still working for the British intelligence services during the Cold War – began trending worldwide.
