Small food businesses are today (Tuesday, May 25th) being encouraged to apply for funding under the LEADER Food Initiative – a €5 million investment aimed at assisting businesses to deal with the challenges posed by Brexit and COVID-19.
The final call for applications was made by Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue and Minister of State for Land Use and Biodiversity, Pippa Hackett.

A key objective of the Irish National Rural Network (NRN) is to promote innovative initiatives that can help people in the farming community and in rural areas to maximize the success of the objectives set out in Ireland’s Rural Development Programme (RDP) on behalf of the Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine.
A recent Entrepreneurial Young Trained Farmer case study they carried with 27-year-old Karol Devaney from Co Sligo is a key example of how the network communicates important opportunities and outputs in the RDP to the general public.

€2.2 million funding for two peatland projects has been announced by the Minister of State for land use and biodiversity Pippa Hackett.
The project will be aimed at “finding better ways” to manage on-farm peat soils in the midlands.
The two projects were selected following an open call under the European Innovation Partnerships Initiative (EIP) and will be funded under Ireland’s Rural Development Programme.
Additional funding for a Rural Development Programme was announced at Budget 2021 for the period of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) transition.
The two projects that were selected for the funding are operated by Wetland Surveys Ireland and Green Restoration Ireland.
Funding of €2.2m has been confirmed for two projects that will focus on finding better ways to manage on-farm drained peat soils in the midlands, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture Pippa Hackett has announced.
The two projects were selected following an open call under the European Innovation Partnerships (EIP) initiative and will be funded under Ireland’s Rural Development Programme 2014-202I.
The two groups selected were Wetland Surveys Ireland and Green Restoration Ireland.
Minister Hackett said: “Managing our soils in a way that captures and stores carbon can have huge climate benefits and projects like these, which involve close collaboration between scientists, ecologists and farmers, will deliver those benefits.
