“No external alterations are proposed to the building or its curtilage and as such it is considered that the application proposal will have no material impact on surrounding heritage assets,” their agents told the council.  But here is what the public has said about the proposals: the comments are taken directly from the council’s planning portal.  Five Bells, Upwell - Credit: Five Bells, Upwell  Mr John Mytton (Objects)  Comment submitted date: Sat 13 Mar 2021  Every time I have been in there it has been pleasant with no trouble in it will be a big lost to a very nice village and be thought out

Letters to the Fenland Citizen editor: March 3, 2021

Letters to the Fenland Citizen editor: March 3, 2021 Signs could have been more clear for bridge-strike driver Following your report in last week’s Fenland Citizen of a bridge strike at the dive-under (newly re-opened) at Stonea level crossing – you may be interested by the signs that the errant driver must have seen when approaching it. Some distance away, a large sign warns drivers of the general situation (photo 1), but the old height limit has been merely masked over, and the height limit is now shown by a sign about half a metre above the grass. Drivers do not usually expect to see a permanent road sign so low down. Closer to the hazard, another large sign tries to inform drivers about the ‘bridge headroom’ but, as shown by photo 2, this sign is also not located in an ideal position.

Unviable West Norfolk village pub set for new lease of life

Unviable West Norfolk village pub set for new lease of life Published: 07:00, 20 February 2021 A Fenland village pub that was losing money before the pandemic hit last year looks set to remain permanently closed and given a new lease of life as a holiday let. Christopher Robinson and James Brighty who own the Five Bells in Upwell are looking to West Norfolk Borough Council for planning permission to formalise the historic building s use as a holiday let for up to 20 people. It was used as such last summer, while holidays were still permissable under the covid rules, and the owners say it proved a hit with people wanting to stay there.
