Kim Oscar Johnson, 92, of Ammon, Idaho, passed away at home surrounded by his family on Dec. 15, 2020. He was born Sept. 1, 1928, in Idaho Falls to Oscar Wilhelm Johnson and Phoebe Lucina (Weaver) Johnson. He was the seventh of 12 children and grew up working on family farms where he was instilled with a strong work ethic, love of country, devotion to family, and faith in his Savior. After graduating from Idaho Falls High School, he served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Texas and Louisiana. During those two years, he was engaged to his high school sweetheart, Sharyn June Olson. At one point, Sharyn wrote Kim a Dear John letter to call off their engagement. But Kim wrote back such a beautiful love letter that she decided to wait. They were sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple on Jan. 3, 1951. IDAHO FALLS – Friends and family are celebrating the life of a community and civic leader who died last week.
Mel Erickson passed away Thursday, Dec. 17 at his Idaho Falls home at the age of 95. His official cause of death was not released, but his obituary indicates he was under the care of Encompass Hospice.
Erickson had a long career in sales and served on the city council for 32 years. Mayor Rebecca Casper tells EastIdahoNews.com Erickson was “tireless in his enthusiasm for the wellbeing of the community” and many elected officials have benefitted from his advice and mentoring over the years.
Friday marked the halfway point of a school year held completely during the coronavirus pandemic. The Post Register wanted to hear directly from students about what itâs been like to learn and attend school in 2020.
Students from throughout Bonneville County submitted essays to the paper sharing their thoughts on how the year has gone. Idaho Falls High School sophomore Sascha Mai was selected as the essay contest winner and will receive a $50 Target gift card. Her essay, along with the other finalists for the contest, are published below to show the challenges and highlights of the current state of education.
Retired fighter goes from prison to opening an MMA gym
Idaho Falls, ID (East Idaho News) Opening an MMA gym was never Weston Barnes’ plan, but he’s grateful for the opportunity.
He opened Team Lionheart MMA at 510 2nd Street in September. Barnes is a retired UFC fighter and he tells EastIdahoNews.com interest in the sport has increased exponentially since he opened.
“I started doing it out of my garage,” Barnes says. “I was just going to train kids, but because I’m a fighter, people started asking ‘Can you train me?’ I wasn’t planning on doing all this at first but … I love this.”
