Idaho Teachers Could Be Allowed to Carry Guns in Schools Without Permission

Idaho Teachers Could Be Allowed to Carry Guns in Schools Without Permission On 3/10/21 at 5:18 AM EST A new bill which would allow school employees to carry guns in Idaho has been approved by the state s House State Affairs Committee. House Bill 122, sponsored by Rep. Chad Christensen, would allow public school district employees in the state with an enhanced concealed weapons license to carry a concealed firearm on school property without the prior permission of local trustees. The bill was approved by a 11-2 vote despite attracting strong opposition from law enforcement officials, with the Idaho Sheriffs Association and Idaho Chiefs of Police Association describing it in a letter opposing the bill as a bridge too far, and bad for Idaho, and bad for Idaho children.

The legislation would also remove any “gun-free zone” signs displayed on school property. “To me, that’s a big target for would-be shooters,” said Rep. Chad Christensen (R-Iona), who’s sponsoring the bill. “Hey, come into this school and shoot us up. There’s no guns here, there’s no resistance here. We’ll let you do what you want. Come on in and kill our children,” Christensen said of the signs. The bill passed out of committee along party lines Tuesday morning over the objections of law enforcement and education lobbying groups. Karen Echevarria, who heads the Idaho School Boards Association, pointed out that some schools already allow teachers and staff to carry guns.
