UK troops deployed to Mali as part of the UN’s peacekeeping mission have seized a cache of weapons hidden by suspected Daesh terrorists who had been threatening local communities.
The operation, which was the first of its kind by UN forces in Mali, is a clear demonstration of how British peacekeepers have been making an impact in the UN’s mission to protect civilians during their first six months in the country.
The British force launched the Mission-approved “cordon and search” operation in early May in a village close to the border with Niger, after receiving intelligence about violent extremists operating in the area. The extremists had been intimidating local communities, extorting money and assaulting people who refused to comply with their demands, meaning UK forces were able to respond to protect them under the UN’s peacekeeping mandate.

UK troops have battled a sandstorm to seize a cache of weapons hidden by terrorists in Mali, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said on Saturday.
Around 100 soldiers from the Light Dragoons and Royal Anglian Regiment found AK47 rifles, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, camouflage clothing, radios, mobile phones, and hundreds of litres of fuel during the operation.
The mission took place in early May, shortly after suspected fighters of the so-called Islamic State in the Greater Sahel (ISGS) fled by swimming across the River Niger.
Terrorists had been intimidating locals, extorting money, and assaulting people who refused to comply with their demands meaning UK forces were able to respond to protect them under the U.N.’s peacekeeping mandate, the MoD said.

Bundaberg police are appealing for information after a number of items were stolen from a Kalkie home.
Overnight on April 14, a home on Golden Penda Court was allegedly entered with a number of items being stolen.
Items include a Giant ATX-2 mountain bike with a distinctive black and yellow pattern, a well-worn Z-flex Jimmy Plumer Cruiser skateboard with blue on the bottom and black on top, and a Picasso Asegai speargun with a white handle, black shaft and yellow spear tip cover.
