People with mobility issues have a right to use Helena trails

I was saddened to see the Helena City Commission direction to ban e-bikes Helena’s city trails. The conversation was fueled by a lot of misinformation about e-bikes’ speed, legal status, and potential impact on trails. There was also a lot of flowery language about the value of nature, quietude, being stewards of the land, etc. These appeals to emotion did not necessarily specify how e-bikes eroded these values, which I would argue all user groups clearly share. They also ignored the equally emotional appeals from the disabled and ageing communities about how e-bikes provide access for those of us who are differently abled but also love Helena’s public lands.

Helena to start public process on where to allow e-bikes By: Jonathon Ambarian and last updated 2021-04-14 22:02:00-04 HELENA — Helena city leaders are taking on the issue of where electric bicycles, or e-bikes, should be allowed in the city – and particularly whether to let them go on trails in open lands. During an administrative meeting Wednesday, the Helena City Commission directed city staff to move forward with a public process over the next few months to get input and formulate recommendations on how the city should regulate e-bikes. They also clarified that, for now, e-bikes will continue to be prohibited in Helena’s designated “natural parks” – including areas in the South Hills and around Mount Helena.

Keep Helena s mountain parks motor-free

JOHN GATCHELL The Helena City Parks Department is taking steps that that could allow electric motor bikes (e-bikes) and scooters onto our nonmotorized South Hills. Our mountain parks of Mount Helena and Mount Ascension have been classified by deed, ordinance and city code as no motor vehicles since the mid-1990s. Helena trail users runners, hikers, equestrians and mountain bikers, and conservation groups — have worked together to help create this amazing motor-free mountain trail system. These nonmotorized trails and the nonmotorized national forest beyond are Helena’s greatest outdoor legacy and the backdrop to our community, a priceless trust to protect and pass on.
