Merle Wade Wakefield, 64, has been recommended by the California Department of State Hospitals for placement at 1575 Yaqui Road. Wakefield, who was convicted of sexual assaults dating back to the 1980s, is classified as a sexually violent predator, a designation for those convicted of sexually violent offenses and diagnosed with a mental disorder that makes them likely to re-offend. After serving their prison sentences, SVPs may undergo treatment at state hospitals, but may also petition courts to continue treatment in supervised outpatient locations.

Driver of stolen car leads San Diego police to Mount Helix area before being arrested

SAN DIEGO     A driver in a stolen car led San Diego police on a pursuit from Grantville to Mount Helix on Sunday afternoon, hitting a police car at one point, before he was arrested, police said. The owner of the Kia Stinger called police shortly after 3:30 p.m. to report that his car was stolen from where he parked it on Mission Gorge Place. The owner said he had left the vehicle’s remote key inside the car and someone jumped into the car and drove off, said police Officer John Buttle. Officers spotted the vehicle and began to chase it. At one point, the man drove across the Severin Drive bridge in La Mesa and headed east up Fuerte Drive, a two-lane road. During the chase, the driver pulled off Fuerte onto some more-narrow roads, driving around 20 mph with police and a police helicopter tracking him.
