Hospital staff threaten further protests if outstanding risk pay is not resolved
Disgruntled workers at the Mount St John’s Medical Centre (MSJMC) are adamant that they will be back on the protest lines if the hospital’s administration does not propose an adequate resolution relating to the near $4 million owed in risk allowance.
On Monday, about 30 staff members staged a protest outside the Michael’s Mount facility in hopes that the administrators would realise that “enough is enough”.
Joan Peters, the President of the Antigua and Barbuda Public Service Association (ABPSA), told Observer on Tuesday that she had not yet received an update from the hospital and maintained that, failing satisfactory answers, workers will meet at 10am today to determine the way forward.

Acting Superintendent of Prisons, Jermaine Anthony confirmed the incident and disclosed further details to Observer.
He said that “a prison officer who was assaulted by an inmate, and the officer received multiple stab wounds to his back and arms with a make-shift weapon.”
“Inmates can use just about anything and fashion them into makeshift weapons; toothbrushes, for example,” he shared.
The victim of the stabbing incident, however, was not severely injured.
“I can say that his injuries are not life threatening in any way and he has already been treated at Mount St John’s [Medical Centre] and discharged,” said the acting prison boss.

Several members of staff at the Mount St John’s Medical Centre (MSJMC) who engaged in protest action yesterday morning, said they are giving the hospital administration until Wednesday to address longstanding concerns over risk pay, or they will be taking action again.
About 30 disgruntled workers gathered in front of the Michael’s Mount edifice with placards to demand the attention of the hospital’s administration, who they believed were inadequately remedying thousands of dollars owed in risk allowance.

The man who allegedly caused the death of a 20-year-old youth earlier this year due to dangerous driving will have to wait another three months to find out if his case will be sent to the High Court for trial.
On January 2 2021, Willikies resident Zuri Holder became the country’s first road fatality during a two-vehicle smash-up on the Sir Sydney Walling Highway.
Later that month police arrested and charged 29-year-old Glen Greene for causing death by dangerous driving.
When Greene made his first appearance in the Traffic Court the following day, the hearing was adjourned.
