Warnings: 22 Feb. 14 at 11:56 a.m., someone found a credit card on Mountain Road and turned it over to police. Feb. 14 at 12:16 p.m., a propane stove was left on at a Shaw Hill home, bringing the fire department and police to the scene. Feb. 14 at 3:12 p.m., a pedestrian told police they were almost hit by a car in the parking lot of the Grey Fox Inn. Feb. 15 at 12:13 p.m., police helped a person find someone to pay for tires. Feb. 15 at 3:32 p.m., a school bus slid off the side of Elmore Mountain Road. EMS and police responded, and got all the kids turned over to their parents without injury. The bus was not damaged.

Like us on Facebook.   On a clear mid-winter day several years ago, my student Sarah Wakefield and I pulled on snowshoes, donned backpacks, and headed up through Smuggler’s Notch. Our destination was Big Spring, which rises from Mount Mansfield’s bedrock before flowing east for 100 yards and entering a culvert under Vermont Route 108. When it emerges from the culvert, the spring water joins a stream fed by surface runoff and snowmelt. Spring water maintains a constant temperature, due to its long-term contact far below the surface with bedrock, and the deep sands and gravels of subterranean aquifers that are protected from the vagaries of the weather.
