Pre-K on hold for another year MOUNT DESERT COVID-19 caused Mount Desert Elementary School and Mount Desert Nursery School to shelve plans to start a joint pre-kindergarten program this past fall, and uncertainty over the ongoing impact of the pandemic has put those plans on hold for another year. The plans called for the nursery school to host the pre-K program. “There are still too many unknowns going into the rest of this school year and this summer and next school year,” said Aaron Long, executive director of the nursery school. “I think neither party is ready to move forward until we get a better handle on some of those things.”

Schools OK resource officer renewal BAR HARBOR A three-year-old agreement that allows a police officer to serve as school resource officer (SRO) at Conners Emerson School in Bar Harbor, Mount Desert Island High School and Mount Desert Elementary School has been renewed for another year by the respective school committees. The agreement between the three schools and the Bar Harbor and Mount Desert police departments is detailed in a six-page memorandum of understanding (MOU). It states that the mission of the SRO program is “to promote school safety and the educational climate at the school, not to enforce school discipline or punish students.”

Grants available to MDI teachers  - Mount Desert Islander

Grants available to MDI teachers  December 11, 2020 on News MOUNT DESERT Staff and faculty employed directly by Mount Desert Elementary School, Northeast Harbor Library and Mount Desert Island High School who are interested in developing professional skills are encouraged to apply for a grant through the Maine Community Foundation’s Vincent Astor Incentive Awards program.  Incentive awards, typically between $500 and $3,000, enable school and library personnel to pursue projects that will broaden their experience or education, or otherwise contribute to their skills or to the curriculum of the school. Deadline for application is Feb. 1, 2021.  Applications are available through the schools, Northeast Harbor Library and the Maine Community Foundation.
