MOUNT DORA Dakota Locklear has shown perseverance and courage, despite facing several roadblocks during her final year of high school.
And on Wednesday evening, she ll walk across the stage on Mount Dora High School s football field, donning a cap and gown.
Locklear, 18, has maintained a 3.5 GPA throughout the year, despite her parents moving out of the state. With my parents leaving, and with my dad not in the picture, doing my senior year all by myself without any support from my parents, I ve met a family that shows me more support than ever, Locklear said. They ve shown me how to be pushed and how to be encouraged.
For youth growing up in Lake County, showing livestock at the county fair has been a tradition for 100 years. Over the years, youth showing livestock have developed many life skills as they complete the last portion of their livestock project at the fair and compete amongst their peers. Mikayla Clement, Michaela Melchiorre, Danica Keele and Blake Hendley are prime examples of the life lessons learned through showing at the Lake County Fair. The following are submissions by each of them.
Mikayla Clement: The life lessons I have learned in 4-H and showing livestock at the Lake County Fair will be cherished forever. Being allowed to show at the Lake County Fair is an honor because it allows youth to meet other youth, leaders and local officials to increase our community network.
Emma Pridgen and Dafaney Williams took Overall Grand Champion and Overall Grand Champion Reserve respectively at the Lake County Fair’s steer competition.
