Many churches offering drive-in Christmas Eve services

Dec 23, 2020 A Richland Township church is inviting the community to rejoice together, but apart on Christmas Eve. Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, which organized drive-in services during Easter and Mother’s Day earlier this year, will offer two services Thursday outside the former Martin-Baker America site, enabling attendees to celebrate the message and the moment without leaving their vehicles, church member and co-organizer Debbie Rychak said. Rychak said she recognizes many are struggling this year – some of them grieving. Others have voiced a sense of “hopelessness” about the changes COVID-19 has ushered in. It’s a reason the church decided to reach out to the community to join them Thursday, regardless of their denomination, she said.

Arthur Valade, Kankakee s veteran watchmaker

In the days before digital timepieces, watch repair was a highly skilled job. Working with tiny gears and springs required good eyesight, steady hands and meticulous attention to detail. Amazingly, at age 80, when he retired after 67 years in the jewelry business, Kankakee watchmaker Arthur Valade still possessed all those qualities. He began working at age 13, when he was hired in 1886 by A.H. Pike, owner of a jewelry store on Court Street in downtown Kankakee. “When I started work, there were no electric lights, no street cars, no paved streets,” he told a Kankakee Daily Journal reporter interviewing him in 1946 for an article on his 60th anniversary in the jewelry business. “About all there was on Court Street in addition to stores was mud and board walks.”

Wreaths send an important message | News, Sports, Jobs

The mission of the Wreaths Across America project is simple: Remember, Honor, Teach. It has been fulfilled every year since 1992, and one the organization looks to this weekend as it coordinates December wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery as well as thousands of veterans’ cemeteries and other locations across the country. That work is carried out by volunteers whose efforts ensure that the graves of service members again will be honored with the placement of live, balsam veteran’s wreaths. More than 2,100 locations are scheduled to participate in this year’s ceremonies, which will be held Saturday. Services have been planned for many cemeteries throughout the Tri-State Area, each of which will be part of a bigger effort that seeks to remember the men and women who have served and sacrificed from the Revolutionary War to our present conflicts.
