When Steve Douglas was a budding ecology student, a quarter of a century ago, he discovered what turned out to be a new species of tree on a street corner just a few hundred metres from his home in Sydneyâs Hills District.
âIt was more a case of driving past it [than walking by],â Dr Douglas, now a private ecologist said.
The multi-trunk tree was, on closer inspection, not a common scaly bark eucalyptus like a neighbouring tree.

Nature trail extended in Sydneys South West
A popular walking and bike track in Sydney’s south west continues to expand thanks to $268,000 in funding as part of the NSW Government’s Metropolitan Greenspace Program.
Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes today announced the opening of the latest 1.5km addition to the Macarthur Regional Recreational Trail in the Australian Botanic Garden at Mount Annan.
“Active transport links involving cycleways and pedestrian paths are so important for our growing city and this investment provides a better connection for locals and visitors to enjoy,” Mr Stokes said.
“The 416-hectare Australian Botanic Garden is looking spectacular as we head into Autumn and this new track means more people can access and enjoy this scenic landscape.
Parramatta Park is World Heritage-listed for its various convict-built cottages and other buildings and importance to early Australian settlement history. Old Government House, county home of the first 10 governors of NSW, is Australia s oldest remaining public building and houses a top collection of colonial furniture.

Elizabeth Farm in Rosehill was built in 1793 and is now surrounded by a recreated 1830s garden. John and Elizabeth Macarthur s home played a key role in the early development of NSW. You can wander around the homestead at will, as no velvet ropes constrain your curiosity.
