Against the urging of medical community, Sarasota strips away its mask mandate

SARASOTA – Going against the urging of four medical doctors and other local health experts, the majority of Sarasota city commissioners have agreed to eliminate the city’s mandatory mask ordinance.  The mandate for face coverings in public, put in place last July, was largely rendered symbolic in September after Gov. Ron DeSantis cut local governments’ ability to enforce it.  Those in the majority on the City Commission felt that masks were too “burdensome” for residents and businesses, and because the city could not punish those who did not comply, what was the point in keeping the mandate in place? Besides, people are just going to do what they want, they contended.

Sarasota City Commission supports plan to narrow Ringling Boulevard by two lanes for bikes

Sarasota City Commission supports plan to narrow Ringling Boulevard by two lanes for bikes SARASOTA – Sarasota’s vision for safer streets that accommodate cars, bikes, buses and pedestrians received a formal stamp of approval on Monday when the City Commission passed a resolution several years in the making. The plan – which outlines a ‘complete streets’ program to add seven-foot-wide protected bike lanes between Lime and Pineapple avenues and other safety elements on Ringling Boulevard – passed unanimously. A handful of people spoke to the issue, with half supporting the city’s desire to eliminate two of the four lanes on Ringling Boulevard to accommodate bicyclists.

Sarasota tries to find path forward for homeless service nonprofits

Sarasota tries to find path forward for homeless service nonprofits SARASOTA – After some wrangling, the city of Sarasota thinks it finally has a way to allow community-minded organizations to provide showers and other services for homeless residents in the city.   But while the majority of city commissioners agreed to research a special zoning and permitting program to allow for such services, many felt the effort would be regressive and hinder the city’s protracted efforts to address homelessness.  Even Streets of Paradise, the nonprofit that city leaders want to help, says the effort is halfhearted and short lived.   “We’re grateful for the pathway forward, but it appeared to be less than a genuine pathway,” Cathy Bryant, director of operations for Streets of Paradise, told the Herald-Tribune.
