Courtesy photo Family and friends mourn the loss of Lou Cherry, 83, a former resident of Calais, Vt., who died on April 4, 2021, of pancreatic cancer in Asheville, N.C. Born in 1937 in New York City to Hungarian immigrants, Lou treasured his heritage, particularly its culinary traditions. Along with his service in the National Guard as a cook, he also relished cooking vast quantities of paprikash and goulash for his family and friends. While a student at Earlham College, Lou studied in Mexico and became fluent in Spanish. He earned his master’s from Rutgers University and had a long career as a social worker at Pilgrim Psychiatric Center on Long Island, New York. Lou was also an assistant professor at Stony Brook’s School of Social Welfare. 

College fundraising: Earlham receives $1 3 million, breaks old record

Palladium-Item View Comments RICHMOND, Ind.  Earlham College raised $1.3 million from 2,949 donors at its seventh annual Earlham Day, shattering the previous record of the day-of-giving event, according to a release. “I am truly blown away by not only the generosity of our worldwide community, but also the deep commitment demonstrated by our alumni and friends at a time of great uncertainty in our world,” Earlham President Anne Houtman said. “This year’s Earlham Day has strengthened our capacity to support future generations of students who will go on to become the kind of change-makers the world so desperately needs.” The record-setting event was fueled by the generosity of a group of alumni and other benefactors who matched every donor’s gift, of all amounts, by $200, despite the event being held virtually due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
