A report of a man brandishing a gun from a van in La Mesa ended with a suspected DUI crash that sent five children to the hospital Friday night, police said.
The incident began about 10:40 p.m., when someone reported a motorist with a gun on Aztec Drive, south of Lake Murray Boulevard, said La Mesa police Lt. Katy Lynch.
An officer tried to stop the van, but the driver refused to pull over, police said. The vehicle then crashed at Baltimore Drive.
The officer found five children inside, not properly restrained in car seats. They suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital for further evaluation, police said. The driver, a woman, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and felony child endangerment.

La Mesa Police Department is investigating a homicide in La Mesa following a shooting reported on Lake Murray Boulevard Friday night.
Police began receiving multiple calls at 9:40 p.m. regarding gunshots heard in the parking lot of the Marketplace at Lake Murray Village, 5600 Lake Murray Boulevard.
Police and Heartland Fire Department medics responded to the scene and found a man with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso and immediately began life-saving measures. The victim, a 29-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man was shot and killed Friday night near an abandoned taco shop in a La Mesa shopping center parking lot, police said.
Several 911 callers reported hearing gunshots around 9:35 p.m. in the strip mall off Lake Murray Boulevard just west of Aztec Drive and Cowles Mountain Boulevard, La Mesa police Lt. Katy Lynch said. One caller reported seeing a person lying in the parking lot.
One witness heard about six to nine shots; another heard at least six.
When officers arrived, they found a victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound and began rendering medical aid, Lynch said. Medics later took over, but the man died at the scene.
