2021 SXSW Film Festival Review – Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror
Directed by Kier-La Janisse.
SYNOPSIS:
Woodlands Dark Days and Days Bewitched is the first feature-length documentary on the history of folk horror, from the 1960s to today.
There are few major film genres, if any, as stratified as horror, such that even the most diffuse of subgenres can merit studied dissection. Folk horror is certainly no small part of its rich history, though, and while it’s enjoyed a neat resurgence in recent years, its impact and influence feels largely downplayed in the wider genre discourse.
What s it about?

On July 15, 1968, while searching for clues to past climates and ancient landscapes on land under the joint care of Paakantyi/Barkindji, Ngiyampaa and Mutthi Mutthi people, Earth scientist Jim Bowler ambled across the cremated remains of an Aboriginal woman eroding from a crescent-shaped dune flanking the shoreline of now-dry Lake Mungo in western New South Wales.
