Part of the St. Joseph River needs to be dredged soon. Congressman Fred Upton was on the river with the Coast Guard this week to find out how deep the water is. He says they found it was too shallow for some of the larger freighters.
“Without those loads of sand and gravel for cement, we’re not gonna see the projects finished not only on the interchange with US-31 connecting with I-94 and I-196 right over by Lake Michigan College, but Indiana projects including the toll road work is gonna stop,” he tells WSJM.
Upton has talked to the US Army Corps of Engineers and they have secured emergency funding to pay for the dredging. He expects that will happen in the next few weeks.

Lake Michigan College’s Fab Lab will once again offer summer camps this coming season. Hanson Technology Center Director Chad Dee tells WSJM News the Fab Lab offers makers spaces that include a 3D printer, making it a great place for a young person to learn in a fun way.
“It’s a great way for them to get creative and be able to think of something that maybe nobody else has thought of, and have a way to get something tangible from it,” Dee said.
The camps cover topics like arcade machine building, making a musical instrument, coding, Minecraft engineering, and baseball technology. Dee says there’s also the Fab Lab Boot Camp.
