Plans for charging cars entering Lake District drive ahead

The council is going ahead with a feasibility study to determine certain aspects of the possible arrangement. They voted 9-3 at their most recent meeting last week to support a motion to ask Cumbria County Council for the first time to officially look into charging motorists who visit the national park. The motion would provide a boost in health to Lake District s environment with the reduction of traffic, it would also provide new income which could be used to improve public transport services. But the outcome frustrated Councillor Steve Harwood, who said the town council had not voted on whether a sustainability charge was right for the Lake District.

We must not get complacent : Residents warned ahead of Easter weekend

RESIDENTS have been urged to remember the current Covid-19 regulations. The bank holiday weekend is normally popular amongst residents, with the region also welcoming an influx of tourists. However, with current restrictions limiting people to meet in groups of six or two households, Cumbria Constabulary s Assistant Chief Constable Andy Slattery has revealed patrols will be in place to enforce these rules. Mr Slattery said: It is very positive that our areas of outstanding natural beauty can open up to more visitors and residents alike and we are expecting a busy weekend. We hope that all those enjoying our open spaces do so responsibly, disposing of any rubbish carefully and leaving the areas as they find them.
