SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. Registered nurses at Barton Memorial Hospital held a 2-day strike that ended Sunday morning.
Nurses picketed alongside Lake Tahoe Boulevard and near the hospital and also live streamed a virtual rally on the California Nurses Association Facebook page.
The strike started at 7:30 a.m. Friday and lasted through 7:20 a.m. Sunday.
Nurses held their 2-day strike to raise awareness about pay discrepancies, turnover and what they call “poor working conditions, short-staffing issues, and the board’s general disrespect for the nurses,” a nurse told the Tribune before the strike.
Barton said before the protest that it was “disappointed the nurses are choosing to strike even though we provided a fair and equitable contract to the union 13 months ago with little to no response.”
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The California Tahoe Conservancy will be demolishing the old Tahoe Urgent Care building at the corner of Lake Tahoe Boulevard and 4th Street once acquisition of the property is complete. The .48-acre parcel sits on environmentally sensitive land that is subject to frequent flooding.
Once the transaction is complete the demolition and stabilization process will begin. Work will be completed in the 2021 building season.
During its September 2020 meeting the Conservancy board voted to spend up to $475,000 on the parcel. Funds for the purchase are coming from Proposition 68 funds and the estimated $125,000 to demolish and restore the property will be covered by budgeted land management program funds.

The South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission is scheduled to vote today on whether to approve a new gas station, car wash and convenience store at the “Y” shopping center.
The project would replace the vacant service station at 1020 Emerald Bay Road, next to the Raley’s supermarket, which was recently demolished.
The project, known as “Raley’s Aisle 1 Fuel Station,” would include a 2,134-square-foot convenience store, a 1,310-square-foot automatic car wash and a fueling area with six gas pumps or 12 fueling stations.
The proposal also calls for installation of two double-walled fuel tanks, an “artistic” fence to screen the fuel pumps from Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Emerald Bay Road, landscaping and erosion control measures (best management practices or BMPs), according to a report by Judy Finn, assistant planner for the city of South Lake Tahoe. There would be 16 parking spaces.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Caltrans is holding virtual open house for the new U.S. Highway 50 South Lake Tahoe Safety Project slated for the 2024/25 building seasons. The purpose of this $16.8 million project is to reduce vehicle collisions with those who walk and bicycle within this segment of Highway 50 (referred to as Lake Tahoe Boulevard within city limits) from the junction of the Highway 89 “Y” to Pioneer Trail.
There were 41 reported collisions, including six fatalities, between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2019. Most of those collisions occurred at night, Caltrans said.
A public meeting to describe the project would normally be held in person, but due to the pandemic, a recorded video presentation is being made. Caltrans is seeking community feedback on the plans.
