ATVs in Newport: Police say riding in city beginning to cause issues

Newport Daily News NEWPORT  The Newport Police Department reports they’re “beginning to have issues” with ATVs, albeit nothing “major” and mostly in parks and parking lots. “We currently have not had street issues,” Newport Police Lt. April Amaral said in an email. “We thankfully do not have the big issue as Providence and Cranston, and I’ll assume Newport’s streets are a bit more difficult to navigate, especially during the summer.” The Providence Journal reported in March that Providence public safety officials announced a multifaceted approach to stopping illegal all-terrain vehicles, or ATVs, and dirt bikes on city streets, which included police continuing to enforce the law and destroy the machines when possible, as well as a hotline for residents to report illegal riding.
