More lost supermarkets of York - is your old local here?

IT all began with a photo of the Northern Supermarket in Whitby Avenue in York. We asked readers if they remembered the store - which some reported to be York s first supermarket - and the floodgates opened. Readers have been sharing memories, not only of the Northern, but also of a long list of other well-known and loved supermarts in York that are no longer with us. And we ve had a look through our archives to find some old photos of some more of York s long lost supermarkets. The photos. Our photos today include: The Co-op in Acomb in 1973; Frank Dee s Supermarket, Clifton Green in 1974; Liptons in Goodramgate in late 1980s or early 1990s; Presto in Acomb s Front Street in 1979; Tesco, in Piccadilly in 1988; Robsons in Haxby and Jackson s in Fulford Road in 2000.

We were inundated with responses - so here s a little trip down memory lane, recalling some of our favourite pubs of yesteryear. York Millennium Bridge at 20: It united our city

For the Millennium Bridge did not open in 2000 but in April 2001. Today, we look back at that historic moment which united two communities in York and has been enjoyed by thousands of citizens daily ever since. Our pictures today show the bridge under construction from late 1999 onwards as well as the official opening on April 10, 2001. Millennium Bridge under construction On opening day, residents from the Fulford Road and Fishergate area met up on the crossing with their counterparts from the South Bank and Bishopthorpe Road district. And children from Fishergate Primary School and Knavesmire Primary School waved flags and exchanged big greetings cards to celebrate a new and growing link between the schools.

Boxing Day floods 2015: When York s centre became a river

We all have our memories of that time. For many people, the day will never be forgotten because the devastating floods cost them their homes and businesses. At least until they could repair the damage - which took many months. A lasting memory is of a city centre cut off from the world - and certainly, unless you had a dinghy, a canoe, or very high waders, you could not get from A to B. I remember coming home from visiting family in Edinburgh, arriving at York Railway Staton and unable to take my usual route through town to my house in Fishergate. A friend picked me up and took me round the ring road. A journey that should have taken five minutes took 20.

York Minster at Christmas - in photos

YORK Minster is a focal point for many people in York during the festive season. Whether it is to attend a church service, a carol performance or witness spectacular events such as the Sankta Lucia Festival of Light, a visit to the Minster is part of many families festive traditions. Although visitors and worshippers must now adhere to social distancing rules and wear face coverings, for some people, the Minster will remain very much at the heart of their Christmas celebrations again this year. We dipped into our archive to bring you some lovely photos of Christmas past at York Minster.
