It has been another week filled with heartache as we watched two people of color one only 13 years old die at hands of law enforcement. While I continue to believe in and be encouraged by the adoption of the NAACP and ILACP 10 Shared Principles for reform by police departments throughout the 14th District and Cook County, I am keenly aware that is only one piece of the puzzle, and that there is more work to be done.
This scenario of black and brown individuals being killed during interactions with law enforcement has been increasingly frequent, shining a harsh light on what we must no longer deny is a broken system. In a country where all are to be presumed innocent until proven guilty, this use of lethal force is simply unacceptable. No life deserves to be cut short, period. And no one should ever grieve a life cut short by the hands of government-appointed, taxpayer-funded, protectors of our communities.
Support for Royal Commission
“Shellshock” they called it when men seemingly lost all reason in the trenches of Europe in WWI.
“Battle fatigue” was another term used when fighting men returned home, quiet, distracted, bad-tempered and turning to alcohol before ending the torment with a permanent solution to the war still going on in their heads.
Now we say “nervous breakdown” and “PTSD”, but while we use these terms to recognise the well-known problem of terrible mental health outcomes for defence personnel, we don’t seem to be any closer to a remedy.
I wholeheartedly welcome Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s announcement of a Royal Commission into veteran and defence suicides because we all want to do better by our veterans and serving personnel.
Voter suppression in Georgia

As a general rule, when the underlying motivation of an action can be determined, the measure of its fairness will be exposed. In Georgia, they have passed a law that prohibits giving food or drink to voters standing in line to cast their election ballots. That s obviously a mean-spirited effort to discourage in-person voting. The rest of the law is similarly designed and targeted to suppress voting, especially among certain demographic cohorts who are indirectly being told they are not welcome to participate in the most vital civic activity in our democracy.
Michael Barone claims in his April 9 column that this Georgia law does not represent a return to Jim Crow exclusion practices and to call it such is a despicable lie and a libel against the American people. Methinks he protests too much. No food, no drink? The intensions of the Georgia legislature are quite apparent.
Bill targets crisis in early childhood education

As a manufacturer, it s critical that I field enough well-skilled staff to cover my company s many operations, from custom metal stampings and assembly work.
It s also helpful to remember that my employees successes rely partly on the training and capacity of many other workers, both inside and outside our sector including those in early childhood settings.
These teachers and the pre-K and child care centers that employ them, help develop a foundation for our future workforce. They do so by nurturing children s early math and science skills as well as non-technical abilities such as creativity. Plus, these programs are essential supports for working parents. That makes their quality and quantity, a top concern for countless business fields.
Overtaking someone in a designated turning lane will cost you.
Disobeying a left lane must turn left sign at an intersection Queensland Road Rules Section 88(2) 3 $106 and three points off your license.
This should be considerably higher when approaching the Moores Creek roundabout from Feez Street as the left lane only allows one vehicle to turn and not travel through, where a collision is absolute if an idiot tries to cut people off from the designated turning left lane.
I have dashcam front and rear and I hope some people receive the fine for their stupid behaviour.
The road toll is considerably higher this year and it is no wonder from the stupid, irresponsible drivers taking risks with learner drivers.
