Athens Banner-Herald Representation matters is a phrase often seen in relation to modern film and television. Diversity is necessary and important, but how that is done is just as vital to communication and progress.
In observance of Havdalah, The Congregation Children of Israel will host a streaming video discussion of how Jews portray themselves in cinema at 7 p.m. on Jan. 30, featuring panelists Rabbi Eric Linder of Athens and Dr. Zachary Friedman from Georgia Gwinnett College.
The event is free and open to the public, and will be followed by an audience Q&A discussion.
Topics covered by Rabbi Linder and Dr. Friedman will include the ways that Jews have portrayed aspects of Jewish identity in film, how humor is used, and compare how non-Jews see those films differently from Jews.
