A developer with a vision to convert the old Quality Inn on State Highway 31 East to efficiency apartments came before the Athens City Council on Monday, seeking a zoning change.
The agenda item was the first reading of a request from Profectus Multifamily Capital of Dallas to change the zoning from commercial to Planned Development.
âWe think itâs an amazing opportunity, both for the city and us,â Managing Partner Paul Yazbeck said.
The hilltop site is similar to a property they currently own in Copperas Cove, which has been a successful project, Yazbeck said.

The Athens City Council made a move for the future of the Cain Center April 12, naming Chris Baker as its director. I am so excited to serve the City of Athens as the Director of the Cain Center, Baker stated in a press release. Every job I ve ever had consisted of working with people from multiple backgrounds, cultures, races and it will continue as I work in this capacity.
Baker said he wants every resident to be able to take advantage of what the Cain Center has to offer.
In January this newspaper reported, âAthens could have its most competitive election season in years, and it would be thanks to Damon Krane.â Thatâs now unlikely, so an explanation and final appeal are in order.
First off, I wasnât bluffing. With all eight seats on Athens City Council up for grabs, I encouraged nearly 100 people to run. Seven people expressed serious to moderate interest, and we spent hours talking logistics.
This was a different approach than I took in 2019, when I simply launched my own campaign for mayor. I ended up working closely with council candidates Ellie Hamrick and Chris Monday, but we had not conferred before deciding to run, since we barely knew each other back then.

The City of Athens will not issue a local mask mandate when the state’s requirement ends Apr. 9.
A statement from a city spokesperson, Holly Hollman, said “Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks said Wednesday, April 7, he will not issue a local mask mandate now that Gov. Kay Ivey has rescinded the statewide mask mandate.”
The state order does not require masks but says they’re strongly encouraged.
“Our local businesses and organizations can follow state guidelines and make their own decision whether to encourage or require masks,” Marks said. “COVID certainly has not gone away although more people are getting the vaccine. We still need to be cautious and have personal responsibility.”
